The girls basketball team got off to a rough start. But throughout the year, they accomplished a lot. Coach King says “Thank you for making Cowgirls Basketball relevant again, and also thank you for letting me be a part of it.” They started off the season only knowing left from our right, now having accomplished much more. With an overall record of 5-19 which is 4 more wins than last year. The Cowgirls are progressively getting better!
The first win of the season came against Tombstone, a 27-25 decision in the Tombstone Tournament. Danielle Barba, one of the leading scorers, had a total of 13 points. The Cowgirls went on to beat St. Augustine and Bisbee to finish 3rd overall in the tournament.
The next win came in the regular season with a 41-23 thrashing of Bisbee before a home crowd. The final win of the season came in a nail biter beating Tombstone 41-39 in overtime with Madee Michaels scoring 13 points also having a tremendous 3 pointer that brought the game into overtime and the crowd to their feet with an uproar of cheer. Although we again only beat them by 2 points, it was an amazing accomplishment for the Cowgirls.
Next season we are coming back better than ever. Our goal is to win more games than this season. We hope to have all our juniors back for a team of seniors which would include Zanati Garza, Wren Klump, Jenny Abril, Rebecca Archuletta, Danielle Barba, Kristi Webster and Maddee Michaels. Every girl that was on our team accomplished something this season. Next year our opponents better be ready because our girls are coming back, and this time, we are ready to win, or make our opponents work hard for the win!!
